Instructions for Application:

1) Fill out the questionnaire.

2) Upload your unpublished manuscript.

Short Fiction: One story, 4,000 words or less. Double-spaced, 12pt font. 

Nonfiction: One essay/excerpt, 4,000 words or less. The excerpt should be from the project you plan to workshop from—double-spaced, 12pt font.

Novel: One excerpt (from the project you plan on workshopping from), 4,000 words or less)—double-spaced, 12pt font.

Poetry: Four poems totaling no more than ten pages.
 

Please note the following:

  • If you have previously been accepted to a Tin House workshop, please do not apply with the same sample (different excerpts from the same project are acceptable).
  • Please do not apply with published material. However, it is acceptable to apply with work out for submission.
  • Your submitted manuscript does not need to be a complete story/essay/chapter. For short fiction, you may include a small section at the end that tells us how the story is resolved. This section will not count towards the overall word limit.
  • If accepted, you will have the opportunity to workshop a different manuscript/section.
  • All scholarship applicants will also be considered for general admission.
  • Applicants must be 21 years of age by the time of the workshop.
  • An individual may receive a scholarship to attend our online programming only once. However, an individual who receives a scholarship to attend our online programming is still eligible to apply and receive a scholarship to attend our in-person programming. We ask only that online scholars wait a year to apply i.e. you can accept a scholarship to attend the 2025 Winter Online Workshop and apply for a scholarship to attend the 2026 Summer Workshop. 
  • Your application fee goes to paying our 2024-2025 Reading Fellows.
